    ST. JOHN’S, Oct. 17, 2017 – The Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) will be honouring outstanding women entrepreneurs at a red carpet event on Thursday, October 26h. Now in its 20th year, the Entrepreneur of the Year Awards is an annual celebration, that recognizes women business owners from across the province for their important contributions to the economy and their communities.

    Awards to be presented throughout the evening include the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award sponsored by RBC Royal Bank, Young Entrepreneur Award sponsored by College of the North Atlantic, Trailblazer Award sponsored by Cox & Palmer, Trendsetter Award sponsored by Business Development Bank of Canada, Momentum Award sponsored by Husky Energy, and Economic Impact Award sponsored by Hebron Project.

    The event will take place from 6:00-10:00 p.m. on October 26th at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. The Honourable Siobhan Coady, MHA,, Minister of Natural Resources, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, and Deputy Government House Leader is amoung the speakers scheduled to address the attendees.

    For two decades, NLOWE’s awards program has paid tribute to the province’s most successful women entrepreneurs. By recognizing these entrepreneurs, NLOWE hopes to advance their business and personal networks, to provide significant profile and visibility for them and their businesses, and to increase the number of role models and mentors for all women in business. To date, hundreds of women from every sector of the economy have been nominated for an NLOWE Entrepreneur of the Year Award.     The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), provided $199,019 to enable NLOWE to deliver business management skills training initiatives for women entrepreneurs in the province throughout the year, including the awards gala event.

    “I congratulate the outstanding business owners nominated for NLOWE’s Entrepreneur of the Year Awards,” said Nick Whalen, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA. “Women entrepreneurs make important contributions to their communities and the economy and I commend NLOWE for its efforts to help them succeed. The Government of Canada, through ACOA, fosters innovation and business growth through investments like this one, which is helping to strengthen and grow the middle class.”

    Tickets are still available for the awards gala at a cost of $100 + HST for NLOWE members and $150 + HST for non-members. Corporate tables with premium seating for eight people are also available for $950 + HST.     Digital Skills Pilot

    Presented in partnership with Ladies Learning Code

    The pilot program is designed to give beginners essential 21st century skills that you can start using in your personal and professional life right away. By the end of the 50 hour program, you will have learned important skills to help read, write and participate on the Web and know how to develop your own website from scratch. 

    Topics include: 

    • HTML & CSS
    • jQuery
    • SEO 
    • SEM
    • WordPress & CMS 
    • Blogging
    • Elements of good design including fonts & typography, layout, using colour and graphics,
    • UX/UI, Excel formulas and functions and more.
    The price for 50 hours of training is $550 per participant and space is limited to 15. 


    Currently we are gauging interested for a September start.

    The Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) is currently seeking a qualified photographer to shoot and edit event photos for the 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year Awards to be held on October 26th at the Sheraton Hotel, St. John’s, NL. The successful bidder is also required to shoot individual photos of eight (8) award winners prior to the event.

    The Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) is pleased to invite qualified businesses to submit a proposal for professional services to assist in shooting, producing and editing eight (8), two-minute videos for the 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Gala to be held on October 26, 2017. The primary objective of these videos is to showcase award winners. The successful bidder is also required to film the live Awards Gala event, and produce a short video that NLOWE can use to for future event promotion.

    Unleashing the Potential of Women - An Economic Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador cover

    Unleashing the Potential of Women: An Economic Action Plan was developed from ideas discussed at the Women's Economic Forum's held in November 2016, and includes actionable recommendations for private sector organizations, governments, public institutions, and individuals to foster growth of women-owned businesses and increase the number of women in senior leadership. 

    The Action Plan represents the collective efforts, ideas, and contributions of a diverse and knowledgeable group of stakeholders from Newfoundland & Labrador and will serve to engage every member of the community in contributing to the economic growth and impact of women.

    The Action Plan was launched at a press conference on June 14, 2017 and is now available in both digital and hard copy.
