The Taskforce for Women’s Business Growth has released a report calling for governments at all levels to do more to support Canadian women entrepreneurs.
Women-led businesses in Canada represent a huge economic opportunity for our country. Majority women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises represent over $117 billion per annum of economic activity in Canada. Yet, majority women-owned firms fail to grow as quickly as firms led by men.  These differences are reflected in Canadian productivity and competitiveness.
Describing it as an essential strategy for sustained economic growth for the country, the report projects that a 20 percent increase in total revenues among majority female-owned enterprises will contribute an additional $2 billion per annum to the Canadian economy.
The report outlines the need for a concerted effort to mobilize this underdeveloped segment of the Canadian economy through a five-point strategy.

    Recommendations include:

    1. Create a national women-focused economic development strategy.
    2. Create business stimulation programs to develop foreign trade.
    3. Create and implement measureable supplier diversity procurement objectives for all federal agencies and departments.
    4. Enhance women’s financial literacy and awareness of gender influences in firm capitalization through training and other incentives.
    5. Increase the adoption of technology in women-led firms through training and other incentives.

    Request for Proposals

In an effort to provide established and aspiring women entrepreneurs with access to quality skills development opportunities regardless of geographic location, the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) is launching a one-on-one training initiative for business women in Southern Labrador.  The training will consist of one-on-one Simply Accounting training that will increase the business development and management skills of participants.

The successful applicant will be required to travel to Southern Labrador and train five (5) business women on computerized accounting, in particular Simply Accounting software and proper filing systems. One-on-one in-person training will be delivered over a two week period. The training will require the following:

    • Pre-training phone call with each participant to determine specific individual training needs (5hrs).
    • Travel to Southern Labrador, i.e. Port Hope Simpson, Lodge Bay, Mary's Harbour, Red Bay, or L'Anse au Loup.
    • 75hrs of training time (15hrs, two days per participant)
    • One hour 'follow-up' via phone/email for questions on Simply Accounting. (5hrs)

While the expertise of the applicant and the quality of work produced will be important in the selection process, NLOWE is a non-profit organization with limited resources, and as such, cost will also be an important consideration.

Following the delivery of this training, there are plans to organize future, topic-specific training at a variety of skill levels including intermediate and advanced.  The successful applicant should also indicate their ability to facilitate future training on a go-forward basis.

Training MUST be completed by November 30, 2011.

NLOWE is pleased to now offer its corporate members the opportunity to be profiled in NewsLink, our monthly newsletter.

Corporate Member Focus allows member corporations, which typically hold an associate or non-voting membership, the opportunity to explain why they are associated with NLOWE, what services they offer to women in business, and what opportunities are available for women business owners as potential clients.

Corporate Member Focus will run once a quarter in our newsletter as demand permits.

Regular voting members (women business owners) may continue to be profiled as part of our regular Spotlight feature.
