NLOWE’s 2020 Entrepreneur of the Year Awards marks 23 years of recognizing and celebrating the women business owners of Newfoundland and Labrador
ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) will be honouring outstanding women entrepreneurs at a live virtual event presented online on Thursday, November 26th, 2020. Now in its 23rd year, the Entrepreneur of the Year Awards is an annual celebration that recognizes women business owners from across Newfoundland and Labrador for their important contributions to the economy and their communities.
Awards to be presented throughout the evening include the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award sponsored by RBC Royal Bank, the Young Entrepreneur Award sponsored by College of the North Atlantic, the Economic Impact Award sponsored by Hebron Project, the Momentum Award sponsored by McInnes Cooper, the Trendsetter Award sponsored by Bluedrop Learning Networks, and the Trailblazer Award sponsored by Cox & Palmer.
“This year’s award recipients reflect the diversity and represents a wide range of industry sectors where women are making a difference in Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Jennifer Bessell, CEO of NLOWE. “This is inspiring and reflects the ongoing need to encourage and cultivate the participation of women in non-traditional business endeavors and, indeed, business in general.”
The event will take place online on November 26th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Highlights include award presentations and virtual greetings from distinguished guests and sponsors. The Honourable Judy M. Foote, P.C., O.N.L., Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador is among the individuals scheduled to bring virtual greetings to attendees.
“Congratulations to the exceptional entrepreneurs who will be recognized through these awards. It is my honour to join NLOWE in celebration of these women and their professional accomplishments,” says the Honourable Judy Foote, Lieutenant Governor. “It is important that, as women, we support one another to continue to build a stronger, gender equal society. As role models, we share a responsibility to show girls and women that there is no limit to their potential.”
For over two decades, NLOWE’s awards program has paid tribute to the province’s most successful women entrepreneurs. By recognizing these entrepreneurs, NLOWE hopes to advance their business and personal networks, to provide significant profile and visibility for them and their businesses, and to increase the number of role models and mentors for all women in business. To date, hundreds of women from every sector of the economy have been nominated for an NLOWE Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), has invested $583,428 in NLOWE to provide business counselling services and skills development opportunities to women entrepreneurs. The annual awards event is just one of the many networking activities NLOWE organizes in the province throughout the year.
“We are proud to support NLOWE’s work to help women entrepreneurs build strong and successful businesses,” says the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA. “As a former entrepreneur myself, I understand the challenges many of them are facing especially during these difficult times. Congratulations to the talented women in business nominated for NLOWE awards. Through hard work and resourcefulness, women entrepreneurs across Newfoundland and Labrador are supporting economic growth and creating good jobs in their communities.”
